when you grown up never having to use public transportation, and everything is so spread out in the u.s., it's easy to get hooked on cars. i'm totally hooked. maybe our gas prices can force us to adapt to another way.

even the east coast cities are better in the US in terms of public transit, but only if you live in the city. our american lives are just so car dependant. it's frustrating!

Stole the words from my mouth. Walking makes a huge difference, unfortunately the US doesn't have the infrastructure set up for that yet.

I think the difference in cost tolerance can be attributed to the amount of driving they do. They can afford gas that is twice as expensive when they drive 75% less than we do in the average year.

When they need groceries in Germany, they can walk to the corner grocer (instead of driving 10 or 15 miles each way to Costco). They live near where they work. And they have mass transit

it's true that we're total whiners about gas prices in the states. the europeans have been paying out the nose for years. it cracked me up when bush went to the middle east recently to ask them to help us out with our gas price crisis. why should they care? waaaahh!
