Milk on the Rocks

If you read my blog, that means you probably have some level of trust in the things I tell you. Today I'm asking you to tap into that trust and give me a chance, because I'm CERTAIN that some of you out there are going to think I'm crazy!

Last night I was eating a cookie and with some milk. Not just any old milk. Ice milk. That's right folks, ice IN the glass of milk. "What?!?! That's WEIRD! Ice doesn't belong in milk! Gross!" Just a sampling of comments I've received from friends over the years, and maybe even what you're thinking right now. Trust me - it's awesome. The picture above is really an equation that will allow you to reach milk nirvana. If you're having a hard time drinking this down (ha ha), keep in mind milk is mostly water anyway, so really it's not a big deal if the ice melts a bit. In fact, I don't even really LIKE drinking milk that much. I've gotta have it on the rocks or not at all.

As I was drinking my icy milk last night it hit me - I have a food blog that bunches of people read - and none of those bunches can talk back! (Well, I guess you CAN comment, but you know what I mean.) Remember, you trust me. I know what I'm talking about. TRY IT. What's the worst that can happen?

I totally agree with you. Ice cold milk is the only way to go! I don't regularly put ice in my milk, but I have serious issues about the temperature of milk, and if it is out of the fridge longer than it takes to pour it in your glass, bowl, whatever, it is too long. I have had milk that had been in the freezer and thawed so when poured there were ice chunks in it and it was divine! Yum!

I don't know Jane... my Grandpa did that ALL the time when we were little and we all thought it was weird! It does have to be cold, but I think you MIGHT be pushing it with the ice. Although, I am ice obsessed right now. Did I mention that I don't think you're weird?

Adrianne, my grandpa did it all the time too. I've never actually tried it... maybe one of these days.

Love ice cold milk and am known to put ice cubes in my cereal bowl: sprinkle grapenuts with nesquick, add ice cubes and milk = heaven:)

Since I am currently pregnant - the beer glasses that live in the freezer awaiting an ice cold microbrew are now regularly filled with milk. It is wonderful - but use a coaster...

another vote for putting any ol' thick glass in the freezer. I store two in there and have ice cold milk (or a really frosty root beer float) any time I please! :)

so happy to see this post! I have been trying to convert people to the whole "ice in your milk" thing for years! glad to see there are others as "crazy" as I am. I too will bypass a glass of milk or a bowl of cold cereal if there is no ice available. it just has to be THAT icy cold to appeal to me. I really don't get what's so weird about it...we put ice in soda and other drinks, why not milk??

This is obviously an antiquated way of taking your milk (see multiple grampa references). Modern-day refrigeration has eliminated the need for this people! Just kidding. I'll own up to one of those "that's wierd!" comments, but I have to say he bottom half fo the glass always tastes better with a couple-o-cubes.

I don't know Janers, Nate the tank is getting pretty sassy in his posts. you might have that check that. Or I don't know Nate, maybe you should have your own nerdy scientist/surfer dude blog. Let's see who gets the most hits! PS. Milk on the rocks sooocks (I know, pretty pathetic rhyme but it kind of hearkens back to the Red Socks so I think it's okay).

Jane, Jane, Jane, You seem to have many a follower on this one, but I am so sorry I can't concede. I tried to be open-minded, but count me out. There is nothing worse than milk with ice--unless it is my having almost daily contractions for the past 12 weeks. (Nope, not lying, but that is beside the point.) Thanks for trying on the milk con ice thing and although I think you are fabulous and hope this doesn't ruin our friendship...no thank you ma'am. PS. Milk does have to be cold, cold, cold for me to drink it though. I believe that is why I own a refrigerator. :)

I am on the bandwagon for ice milk! I have always had issues with milk consumption. When I was younger, my mom made us kids drink milk with every meal (even spaghetti!). While Mom had her back turned, my brother would drink my milk in one gulp and I would stuff his veggies in my mouth. (See...veggies I have no problem with.) Then, I discovered ice milk and my life has never been the same! Jane, good call.

As much ice as you have in that glass, it would make whole milk 2%, 2% into 1%, and 1% into skim. I like two cubes myself.

I like chilly milk!

Have tried it, can't stand it. I like my ice icy and my milk milky, and nary the two shall meet.

The worst that can happen is completely losing faith in TWFD! I do not share your love of icy milk, however I do love ice cold milk. The rest of my family prefers warm milk...definately not my fav.

I love reading your blog and getting ideas! This idea is a great one, and I use it with my milk shakes I have been using for my diet. Definately makes it yummier in my book!

I prefer to leave my milk out until it develops what I call 'flavor globs'. Delish! So good you can eat it with a fork.

Alice, on the other hand, sides with the comment by Kerry. She buys two gallons of milk and puts one in the freezer. Once the freezer milk is ready for use, she lets it thaw a bit until it is still mostly ice. Then she can enjoy a pseudo milkshake, on demand for days, by vigorously shaking the milk before pouring.

I like it both ways- depends on how cold the fridge is. But I do have to say I've never seen a glass of ice milk with that much ice! Woooweee... you crazy girl...

wow...I thought there'd be SOME comments, but, wow! you all are cracking me up, and I'm glad there are some out there on my side. :)

I have to say something about the picture - it is for aesthetic reasons that the glass is filled to the top with ice - I don't NORMALLY add that much ice (although, I WOULD drink this glass of milk), but I thought a pic with just one or two cubes just wouldn't be as pretty. :)

If my milk isn't cold enough, I will add ice. I watched my mom do it when I was a kid, and now find myself doing it, too. No biggie. Ice cold milk is good!

I am a milk snob and ice is the way to go...Unless you have a stainless steel cup...BTW...we just moved to Utah and I do have to say the milk here is to die for!

Mark & Deidra Smith said...

PS. Why is it that when you drink milk alone...It has to be freezing cold. But, add chocolate to it and you can drink it at room temp!?!...or ...at least I can!

In a restaurant ice milk is the only way to go. I always order a cup of ice if I'm ordering milk. You never know what temperature the milk will be and I can't stand it warm.
